Prize: $1,200.00

 

  • An original handbell composition suitable for massed ringing

  • 3-5 octaves, HMA Level 2 – 3  (Optional handchimes or other instruments may be used)

  • Performance time not to exceed 4.5 minutes

Deadline: April 15, 2026

ONLY ORIGINAL, UNPUBLISHED WORKS MAY BE SUBMITTED

WORKS THAT INCLUDE ARRANGEMENTS OF EXISTING TUNES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

Entries may not be under consideration by any other contest or publisher while being considered by Area 2.  Failure to observe this clause will result in immediate forfeiture of any prize awarded.

 

  • Please use HMA/AGEHR publication Handbell Notation and Grading System as a reference guide for all compositional notation.
  • Composers may enter up to two (2) manuscripts if they wish, but each is to be sent under a separate cover letter.
  • To enter, send a cover letter, manuscript PDF file, and MP3 audio of the piece. Prepare a cover letter containing:
          • Title
          • Intended playing time
          • Composer’s name, address, phone, and email address.
          • The manuscript of the piece should include: Title, category, bells used chart, optional instructions, and duration.
          • DO NOT INCLUDE THE COMPOSER’S NAME ON ANY MANUSCRIPT PAGE.
          • Submit cover letter, manuscript, and MP3 together in a single email.
  • Decision of the judges is final. Area 2 reserves the right to select an entry that, in our sole judgment, is suitable for Festival performance. Area 2 reserves the right to not award a prize.
  • Winning entries will be performed at the 2027 Festival Conference.
  • Area 2 will request a suitable dedication line when the composition is published. Area 2 reserves the right to be the sole dedicatee.
  • Winning composition may not be presented or performed in any festival, area, or local event prior to the 2027 Area 2 Festival Conference.
  • Area 2 adheres to copyright laws. Copyright obligations and adherence to copyright law is expected of all composers.
  • ENTRIES MUST BE SUBMITTED VIA EMAIL BY APRIL 15, 2026
